This unit is designed to provide students with detailed insights into the history of Asian Studies. It examines the colonial roots of Asian or Oriental Studies and the post-war emergence of Area Studies and its relationship with Cold War priorities. Contemporary debates between advocates of Area Studies and defenders of traditional discipline boundaries are also examined. This unit also has an explicit practical focus, with students required to read literature on structure, writing conventions, making arguments and referencing. Students are required to write and present research proposals to the group and provide feedback about the research of others in the class. -- Course Website
