This unit deals with the major sociocultural and economic issues facing Japan in the context of a rapidly changing Asia–Pacific region. Over the half century since the end of World War II, Japan has been transformed from a war-devastated, barely functioning economy to a leading industrial superpower. Accompanying this process were major ramifications both within Japan and in the wider Asia–Pacific region.
