As cities assume a growing importance in all societies, as they house an increasing proportion of the world's people, and as they become more closely interlinked through the processes of globalisation, so they command more attention from anthropologists and sociologists. How do we imagine, produce, live in and experience cities? Does urban life across the globe differ fundamentally from rural life, or is it better understood in reference to particular structural, societal or cultural contexts?
