Culture/gender/sexuality provides a significant site from which all forms of social life can be explored. This unit examines the centrality and diversity of gender relations and sexual identity by placing an emphasis on cultural beliefs and practices in a range of ethnographic settings. By way of written texts, popular culture and contemporary film, the themes considered include how the relationships between women and men are constituted, the politics of sexual difference, gender-crossing, dress and language, and the intersection and representation of gender with race, class, religion, age and ethnicity. -- Course Website
