This unit provides students with an opportunity to focus specifically on contemporary Australian art and understand Australia's place within the international art world. As well as looking at iconic, controversial and innovative examples of Australian art practice from the late 20th and early 21st centuries, students will analyse the contexts for Australian art at local, national and global levels. Australian art will be examined in the contexts of the centre-periphery debates, Australia's role in international art events, the rise of new museological practice, artist run spaces and guerrilla art events.
