This unit provides the introduction to the major influences on language and literacy development in young children. It examines relevant theoretical models and focuses on the range of ways young children encounter and use symbol systems whilst exploring their diverse everyday worlds. Students critically engage with current research, practice and policy in literacy in multiple contexts. They begin to develop pedagogical tools that will enable them to successfully support children's literacy learning in the early years of school and are introduced to relevant school-based curriculum. -- Course Website
