The unit investigates the idea of European unity expressed by writers, philosophers and intellectuals in key countries of Western Europe from the 18th to 20th centuries. It pays attention to the cultural traditions that shaped the forms taken by this idea and the national context within which it arose. It introduces students to the way literary and philosophical representations of European unity were invoked at key moments in the history of the European Union to promote the notion of European citizenship. -- Course Website
