Instrumental Hypnosis: Putting Hypnosis to Work

This unit examines the ways in which experimental hypnosis methods have been used by cognitive psychologists and neuroscientists to explore or 'model' clinical phenomena (eg, functional amnesia, clinical delusions, conversion disorders). We will discuss:<br/>- the nature of hypnosis (its history, definition, measurement, and investigation);<br/>- views about hypnosis and hypnotisability and their relationship to psychopathology;<br/>- research methods in hypnosis (intrinsic and instrumental); and<br/>- a selection of pathological conditions that have been or can be modelled by hypnosis.<br/><br/>The class will involve videos of hypnosis sessions, analysis of journal articles,... -- Course Website
