Optical systems range from nanotechnology-based devices to compact integrated optical components built up with waveguides, to larger systems for biophotonics, optical data storage, metrology, microscopy, machine vision and imaging. In this unit, the design and operation of such systems is reviewed, including engineering aspects such as fabrication; signal-to-noise ratio; opto-mechanical design and packaging; thermal management; and control software. The laboratory component of the unit includes a team project incorporating system design and assembly. -- Course Website
