This unit introduces students to various disorders of higher-order mental processing that manifest in delusions, hallucinations and other aberrant experiences, such as abnormal experiences of agency (ie, the sense that our conscious intentions cause our actions) and body ownership. The aims are to advance understanding of the nature of these seemingly bizarre phenomena (many of which present clinically as psychiatric symptoms) and how theoretical models of breakdowns in mental processing can be used to better explain them. A focus will be recent theoretical and empirical work on the study of delusions, including the use of hypnosis to test current models. -- Course Website
