This unit is a practical and theoretical unit in the ensemble drumming of West Africa, which investigates three different traditions from Ghana. Participants receive direct hands-on tuition in these traditions from an experienced practitioner, and where possible, on authentic instruments. The unit focuses strongly on interlocking networks of simple support parts, which combine to create complex and sophisticated rhythmic structures, and further investigates the phenomena of polyrhythm, polymetre and rhythmic ambiguity in African drumming.
