This unit aims at providing students with a general knowledge of the historical tradition and transition of Japan. The unit begins in ancient Japan and continues through the major periods of Japanese history until the present day. For each period, the key individuals, groups, events and developments, along with the important issues and concepts, will be introduced. Topics covered include the Japanese imperial court and emperors, the rule of the samurai, Japan's national isolation and subsequent modernisation, and WWII and its related events and issues.
