This unit introduces students from a range of disciplines to geographic information science and geographic information systems (GIS). GIS is a technology that manages, analyses and disseminates geographic information. GIS uses databases to provide 'intelligent maps' of features on the earth's surface and provides tools to derive new information from existing data. GIS provides information for many fields, for example, resource management, environmental evaluation, responding to emergencies and targeting market segments.
