This is an introductory unit in macroeconomics – the study of the economy as a whole or as an aggregated entity. Topics include: GDP and inflation; savings and wealth; unemployment; business cycles; the basic Keynesian model; fiscal policy; money and monetary policy; the aggregate supply–aggregate demand model; the exchange rate; and balance of payments. This unit should enable students to appreciate economic problems more clearly, to recognise which factors are critical and which arguments are dubious, and to begin to be able to evaluate conflicting claims about the economy. -- Course Website
