A detailed study of monasticism in Egypt based on documentary papyri and inscriptions in Greek and Coptic (studied in English translation). A number of key cases studies will be examined, including Melitian monasticism, and the monasteries of Bawit, Bala'izah, and western Thebes. -- Course Website
