It is generally thought that religion in the Byzantine Empire was monolithic with the Byzantine Orthodox Church being the dominant tradition. However, this unit examines not only the tradition of the Byzantine Orthodox Church but also the various Gnostic and Manichaean groups, the non-Chalcedonian churches, such as the Armenian, Coptic, and Syriac communities, as well as Judaism and Islam. Given that the Byzantine Empire spanned the period from the fourth through to the fifteenth century it had of necessity during its long history to accept a variety of religious and cultural differences. -- Course Website
