This unit is a study of sexuality and gender in the ancient Mediterranean world from Egypt to Late Antiquity, but with special emphasis on classical Greek and Roman society. It also looks at the convergence of classical traditions and Judaeo-Christian thought in late antique Rome. The unit focuses on, amongst others, the works of: Homer; Herodotus; Thucydides; the Greek tragedians; Xenophon; the Roman poets; and Jerome. The unit draws upon the contributions of women's history and feminist scholarship to the study of antiquity. -- Course Website
