In the early eighth century BCE Greeks began to settle ('colonize') outside Balkan Greece. This unit examines the story of Greek community life, economic life, aggression and defence, from the eighth century until the beginning of the fourth century. During these years Greeks were rules by kings, aristocrats, oligarchs, tyrants, and (some of them) by themselves, in the world's first democratic systems. -- Course Website
