This course explores the system of schools as social institutions, their geographical placement and the consequences various locations have for teachers and the subjects they will teach when beginning their careers. Sociological concepts are used to help identify the positions of schools within a system of schools so as to support teacher understanding of the factors which separate some types of schools from others and leads students to ascertain why outcomes vary according to types of schools teachers are likely to encounter in their careers.
