Cultural aspirations and interpretations are expressed in the art, architecture and design of a period. There will be a strong emphasis on Australian built environment history, theory and criticism. Did the new continent inspire a new vision? We traverse the changes from ethno-archaeology pre-colonialism to a post invasion landscape. Perceptions of ‘civilisation’ are critiqued through the late eighteenth into the nineteenth century. Federation in Australia allows us to explore issues of nationalism, empire and the vexed question of an appropriate national style.
