This unit covers the origins of human settlement and the development of the city through history. Theories and issues regarding the sources of urbanization are presented. The functions, forms and image of the city from prehistoric to contemporary periods and in diverse places and cultures are studied. Various ways of how the city is seen, described and understood by different cultures and periods, are discussed. -- Course Website
