The unit begins by discussing the importance and contribution that research can make to the knowledge needs of natural and cultural environments. This discussion will also include issues such as the protocols required to engage in such research, community consultation processes and the intellectual property rights that protect such research. The unit then examines the various methods for locating, gathering, interpreting and writing research.  This includes a critical analysis of the source materials and an understanding of the context in which they will be presented.
