This unit introduces the basic principles of Geographic Information Systems (GIS), and includes both theoretical and practical components.  The unit covers basic mapping theory, data acquisition (GPS, digitizing and remote sensing) and display, simple spatial analysis, and the application of GIS to environmental research and monitoring.  Students will achieve basic competency in the use of widely-used GIS software through practical exercises. -- Course Website
