The unit aims to provide students with a practical understanding of the criminal justice system. Students will be expected to become familiar with the statutes and case law shaping the law of criminal procedure. Students will also be encouraged to consider the adequacy of our procedural laws and whether reform is appropriate. The unit examines: courts exercising criminal jurisdiction; the commencement of criminal proceedings; bail; search, seizure and forensic procedures; police questioning; identification evidence; the role of the DPP, Crown Solicitor and Counsel and Police in the prosecution of offences; the accused's pleadings and the jury system.Assessment -- Course Website
