Community development work assists community groups to determine their own needs and to obtain resources to meet those needs. Community development is a form of practice, a broad philosophical and political approach which focuses on collective efforts to improve community wellbeing, and is based on a critical understanding of inequality in our sociopolitical structures. The unit aims to provide an understanding of community development theory and practice perspectives, to present different models of community work and to critically analyse the value and ideological underpinnings of community development practice.
