The focus of this unit is on the development of a broad integrative approach to understanding psychological disorders through consideration of physiological, psychological, family and social factors that contribute to a broad biopsychosocial perspective. Issues related to classification and diagnosis will be covered, with a particular emphasis on a critical evaluation of DSM-IV-TR and ICD-10 as diagnostic tools as well as the proposed DSM-5. The major groups of psychological disorders such as mood, anxiety, psychotic disorders will be considered with a lifespan approach to understanding psychopathology in children, adolescents, adults and older adults.
