This unit is the first of three compulsory units in primary mathematics education. The unit aims to promote students' understanding of how children's mathematical concepts develop in two key areas - number and measurement. Student's interaction with and analysis of childrens' responses to mathematical tasks will be used as a stimulus for them to examine their own understandings of some of the key mathematical concepts, terminology, operations and procedures related to our number systems and measurement. Building on these experiences, students will explore the development of learning activities to support children's further construction of these mathematical concepts.
