Understanding how language varies and the factors that lead to it as well as the social responses to variation form the base knowledge for this unit. Varieties of language in Australia including immigrant and indigenous languages and the nature of culture and its relationship to language and thought are also central areas of study. With an understanding of language, context and variation and concepts of class, gender and race (particularly in relation to language education and work) and their meaning in terms of personal and classroom experience, students will consider the impact of language use and policies on the diverse membership of Australian society.Assessment -- Course Website
