This unit is designed for students beginning their study of linguistics. Students will be introduced to modern linguistic study and its major theoretical and methodological issues, in particular those relating to phonetics and phonology. Topics include an overview of language and communication, how languages have evolved and the position of English in relationship to other languages. A major focus is the sounds of English, how they are produced, and how linguists transcribe these sounds in order to study spoken language.
