This unit demonstrates how language study at the discoursal level can be applied in the language classroom. It enables participants to critically examine and apply key approaches to the analysis of spoken and written language in order to select and utilise texts for teaching purposes. Topics include: definitions of discourse and discourse analysis; perspectives on text analysis; notions of context and common ground, tools for analysis of spoken and written texts, including Grecian pragmatics, speech act theory and conversational analysis; textual coherence; the analysis of the rhetorical structure of texts; and critical language analysis for teaching purposes.Assessment -- Course Website
