This unit provides students with an in depth understanding of how language and emergent literacy develop in infants and young children. Students investigate theories and approaches to supporting early language and literacy development in children from birth to 8 years and consider their implications for practice. They also learn to assess, monitor and plan for children’s language and literacy development. Topics covered include definitions of language and literacy, the components of spoken language, language development, the role of adult-child interaction in children’s language learning, the importance of home literacy practices, accessing quality children’s literature and digital texts,... -- Course Website
