This unit deals with the sociological issues related to deviance and social control in two ways. One approach involves examining theories of social control and the construction of marginal identities as these relate to conceptions of culture and the social world. The concepts will also be examined as powerful assumptions in changing professional practice. The second approach includes in-depth case studies which illustrate the various theoretical issues. These case studies include such topics as prisons and punishment, homelessness, women and medical science, madness, and drug and alcohol use and abuse.Assessment -- Course Website
