This unit examines the literature of the supernatural through a study of texts across a broad historical period. It includes gothic novels (such as Frankenstein) as well as recent popular cultural texts in genres such as fantasy novels (such as Harry Potter, The Lord of the Rings or A Game of Thrones), revisionist fairytales (such as Angela Carter or Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde) and the literary fantastic (such as The Master and Margarita or Jeanette Winterson). Comparative in nature, the unit examines the representation of supernatural and fantastic elements through an investigation of myth, legend, fairytale and modern supernatural fiction.
